Sixth Formers on top at North Coast Integrated College

April 2, 2019

Grace, a year 13 pupil at North Coast Integrated College, has recently secured a much sought after internship at a prestigious London law firm for this coming summer. Grace applied for this internship through the Social Mobility Foundation and fought off stiff competition. Principal, Mrs Passmore congratulated future law student, Grace, on her success.

Mrs Passmore talked of how proud everyone at NCIC is of their sixth form students, “League tables published by the Belfast Telegraph highlight the brilliant achievement of sixth form pupils at North Coast Integrated College. 69% of pupils achieved the important benchmark of 3 A* - C A levels. As a non-selective school this is particularly impressive; I am so proud of students and teachers who have worked so hard to ensure that every child has the best possible outcome in their exams. This success cannot be attributed to one particular strategy or intervention- it is the culmination of seven years of parents, pupils and teachers working together. Every child is nurtured- their talents celebrated, achievements recognised with strong pastoral care provision at every stage. All of this allows every pupil to achieve the best possible results.

The breadth of subjects that can be studied at NCIC really do highlight all that is good about integrated education. At NCIC pupils not only excel in the traditional academic A levels but also in the vocation work related qualifications such as childcare or construction. The promotion of equality means that pupils whose strengths are in vocational subjects are also given the opportunity to continue their studies at sixth form.

It is worth noting that in the whole of Northern Ireland, only three schools that had a higher percentage of pupils, who were entitled to free school meals, achieved higher results at A level. Too often pupils who are entitled to free school meals will not consider staying on for A level study. At North Coast Integrated College we aspire pupils to value their education and know that education can bring about positive changes to their lives.

We are a relatively small 11 to 18 college but we are making a difference to the young people’s lives in our community.”
